In New York, physicians need a certificate in order to incorporate acupuncture into their practice. Certification takes 300 credit hours in this state to be certified once one has a medical license. For a listing of acupuncture laws by state, call the National Acupuncture Foundation (see below). The National Commission for the Certification of Acupuncturists (NCCA, see below) has established a certification process, and NCCA certification is a requirement for licensure in some states.

This center has a comprehensive program in acupuncture of 2805 hours. Course requirements are waived for those with a background in medicine. For M.D.s, course waivers generally bring the program down to approximately 2100 hours. Several M.D.s have been through this program. The college is also approved to provide a structured 300-hour program for physicians which would allow the physician to use acupuncture in his or her practice. This program is not running yet, but the center anticipates having this program available for enrollment in Fall 1997.

UCLA offers a 200-hour course designed for the M.D. and D.O. The course is divided into three segments:
The New York State Medical Board evaluates out-of-state programs on an individual
basis. The UCLA program has been approved in the past as part of the 300-hour state
requirement.

This institute offers a comprehensive three-year training program in acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine. Medical students and graduates of medical school may arrange to take special courses within the program. Physicians are currently taking the program as a postgraduate option. They will receive a diploma in acupuncture at the end of their study.
