Reclassification of the
Acupuncture Needle.
http://www.fda.gov/bbs/topics/ANSWERS/ANS00722.html
On March 29, 1996 the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced a decision to
reclassify acupuncture needles from Class III investigational devices, to Class II medical
devices for "general acupuncture use" by licensed, registered or certified
practitioners. This action removes the obstacles for insurance companies to
reimburse for acupuncture treatment as long as treatment is provided by a state licensed
acupuncturist.
